Five O’clock

The table was always
beautifully adorned
with pretty linen and
mouthwatering aromas

three sets of pigtails
never starved
for love and care

ashtrays were fixtures,
but laps in the pool
would offset inhaling –
years later, those clear-
colored decorations
would disappear

they loved and laughed
into their ninth decade,

but the secret remained
a mystery, until…

with a wink and a smile,
it was said to be
the olive in the martini

    • It’s always nice to return to those early days, so thanks for your kind words, Ben. I wish my parents were still around. It’s still surreal, losing both of them…

    • They enjoyed their cigarettes, and of course, smoking was a common and cool thing back in the day. But, they gave it up eventually, which we were all thankful for. It’s funny to think of the days where ashtrays were a common component in accessorizing the house. πŸ™‚

    • I’m glad those last lines made you smile, Eric. We’d ask Dad now and then what the secret is to their long, healthy life, and that’s what he would say. πŸ™‚ Of course, no one in our family drinks martinis, so we better step it up in some other way! Thanks, my friend, and have a great Monday!

  1. Lauren, I’m smiling at your last lines, a feeling of light and joy with their martinis and not forgetting the olives! πŸ˜€ You paint a picture of a close loving relationship, long together, of the everyday merging to create a very special life. Beautifully written and thank you for sharing! Hugs xx ❀️

    • Your comments always have a poetic sound to them, Annika. Thank you, and yes, those were great days and decades, and now, they’re fond memories, yet still wishing my parents were still around in the physical sense. As I mentioned to Eric, though, no one in our family drinks martinis, so hopefully, we’ll still live long, healthy lives without those olives. πŸ™‚ Thanks again for your lovely words, my friend. Big hugs and lots of love to you! πŸ’•πŸŒΌ

  2. So beautiful and full of memories! Like Christy I love the three sets of pigtails line too. 😊 Hope you had a lovely Mother’s Day! Xoxo πŸ’•πŸŒΌπŸ€
