It’s the Pits

pit toilet

You open the door
and again, once more
You smell that smell
that comes from hell

Though you pay the price
beneath the stars and sky
So you do your thing
and you feel like a king

Then you open the door
and again, once more
You breathe in the pines
and everything is fine

(Let’s just say, inspirationΒ
comes from many places.)

  1. Haha now I’m actively thinking about pit toilets as I eat breakfast. But it’s better to have hiked and smelled a pit toilet than to never have hiked at all, I guess πŸ™‚

    • Oh, this made me laugh! But, I absolutely love what you wrote and completely agree. And I can insert “camped” and “backpacked” in addition to “hiked.” πŸ™‚ Thanks so much for visiting, Lauren!

    • That’s even more proof that these situations can be a bit unpredictable. πŸ™‚ In fact, I opened the door to one and found a garter snake slithering by the pit toilet. I gently closed the door and chose door #2. πŸ™‚

  2. Lauren, this is so funny! I’ve visited many of these antiquities before our parks and highway systems decided to install the flushing varieties. I’ve witnessed many pranks in the ole outhouse. I never had to watch for bears, as Scott did, but skunks and raccoons were another matter. Love and hugs, dear Lauren.

    • I’m glad you thought so, Michelle! This poem wasn’t initially meant for the blog, but I’m glad to make others smile. πŸ™‚ I hadn’t had any wild animal experiences, but as I told Scott, a friendly little garter snake hung out inside when I opened the door of one. No thanks, though. I chose the other door. πŸ™‚ Lots of love and many hugs to you, my friend!

  3. Perfect! Lol… I remember such a one. Oh my goodness, I don’t remember ever holding my breath for so long!! The stench actually made my eyes water. But as they say, needs must! πŸ˜€

    • I’m glad you laughed, Christy, and I’m actually glad I decided to post it. I think we all need some laughs right about now. πŸ™‚ And yes, it’s fun to play with words no matter what the subject is. ☺
