You are Worthy and Worth It!

How often do we criticize ourselves after looking in the mirror?
How often do we respond to a complement with a simple “thank you”
instead of an apologetic excuse?

How often do we feel unworthy of being loved or of being liked?

Relationships constantly change; some grow into deeper, meaningful commitments, and others fade. Sometimes compatibility shifts, maybe commonalities become less harmonious, or people grow in different directions.

When we land in situations that create heartache and leave us feeling lonely, we need to keep our emotions intact and not be so hasty to point the finger at the person in the mirror. Negative thoughts have a large impact on the perception of living. If we allow ourselves to fall into darkness for too long, it could be dangerous. Unfortunately, my family endured a tragic loss five years ago and there were no outward signs.  More often than not, those dangerous thoughts are kept safely inside of our minds. Reaching out for help is not a sign of weakness but rather a sign of courage.

Below is a poem written by my friend, Jessie Jeanine at http://jessiejeanine.com/. She is a woman of Faith, Love, and Forgiveness. Even after all she has endured, she moves forward with self confidence and perseverance, setting an example for anyone who is struggling with low self esteem. I encourage you to visit her blog for more inspiration and enlightenment.

Scars are Beautiful

Do not tell me I am beautiful

If my scars you have not seen…

The scars on my arms and legs
From being stabbed and cut with blades,
The scars on my back from being whipped,
Or the scars across my stomach from being sick

Do not tell me I am beautiful
Not until you see
Both the darkness and the light
Consuming my mind, in a fight to be free

Do not tell me I am beautiful
Until you have seen me cry
When I break down and show you
Everything, I keep buried deep inside

Do not tell me I am beautiful
Until you know what plagues me
Night terrors and horrors
Please hold me… arms of safety

Do not tell me I am beautiful
If my fears you have not heard;
If my soul you do not understand
Because of pain I have endured

Do not tell me I am beautiful
Until you have cared for me ill
From diseases I was born with
As I fight to stay well

Do not tell me I am beautiful
If my scars you have not seen…
The ones burned deep into my flesh
And my very being

However,
If after you see all of my scars, learn of my fears
And listen to even a portion of what I have survived…
If after all of that, you still accept me and think I am beautiful

If you can kiss my scars without pity
And not be ashamed of me –
If you can see how all of them make me
The perfect woman, survivor and being

Then maybe… just maybe, I will believe you.
I will believe you when you tell me that,
“I am beautiful…”
I am a beautiful woman and human being.

Scars are Beautiful

Some people experience hurt to an extreme degree, while other’s experiences are milder. Regardless, please remember that You are Worthy and You are Worth It
no matter your age; a pessimistic mindset does not discriminate. We all feel pain, but it’s up to us individually to work through it so we can live, laugh, love others, but most importantly, love ourselves again.

“One word frees us of all the weight and pain of life: That word is love.”
Sophocles

Before you leave, please say this to yourself, “I am Worthy and I am Worth It!”

  1. Oh – that was so, so, so real. I would share that with my students if I were teaching right now – will see it I can get it to them somehow. It is SOOO true. And I know so many “beautiful” people. Well done.

    1. Thanks so much, Stacey, and I’m honored that you’d want to share this post with your students. Young people especially, need to know that someone cares and can help if they need it. By the way, thanks for all your visits and comments today! ♥

  2. I wish you a wonderful,blessed Wednesday too,dear Lauren!Thank you for your lovely post and your friend’s poem.Sophocles’quote is sage as well.Isn’t it ? Hugs, Doda ♥

    1. Thanks so much, Doda. I had an idea of doing a post like this, then I saw Jessie’s poem and knew it would be perfect. As I told her, it really tugged at my heart, knowing all she’s endured. Ahh yes, the quote says it all. Love. Many hugs to you, too…♥ xxx

  3. Beautifully done Lauren! It’s an honor to have something posted with you my friend 🙂

Right away I identified with not being able to receive compliments… I always feel awkward and have a hard time just accepting one with a simple thank you or some sign of appreciation. Instead, I make those excuses too, and am immediately thinking about why, what or where I could be better. We’re most often our own worst critic though, right?

Now, I’m starting to think about it differently. Here I am, an advocate for abuse, which means I have no tolerance in witnessing one person treat another badly ~ Therefore, why in the world would I tolerate it from myself, towards myself?! We shouldn’t tolerate self-hate or abuse of self anymore than we would when it’s happening to someone else (seems simple enough I know, but it was one of those light bulb moments for me, lol!)

You’re also right about how much courage it takes to reach out too. Even though it may make us ‘feel’ weak to do so, in reality, it actually takes much more strength than hiding and once done, works to balance the scales by empowering us instead.

Didn’t mean to write so much here, but enjoying the exchange 🙂 Thank you for sharing so much of yourself and your heart with us Lauren, especially through your poetry. You’re an amazingly beautiful soul and it’s been such a pleasure getting to know you through our ‘words’ these past couple of years. Hugs and blessings always! ❤

    1. Thanks, Jessie, and the honor is mine. 🙂 By the way, I am definitely guilty about the compliments; I’m not good at accepting them at all, so they’re a work in progress for me. Your words about abuse, whether it’s directed towards someone else or ourselves, are so true. There is no difference; abuse is abuse and I’m thankful you had that realization moment because you deserve kindness not only from others but from yourself.
I appreciate you lending me your raw, heart tugging poem and I hope other readers take the time to visit you so they can see the light that shines from your faith and beauty. And don’t ever worry about writing long comments; I’ve done it a million times. I’d rather have you feel comfortable knowing you can. 🙂 I look forward to more exchanges in the future, and of course, everything you said about me I can say about you, too, but “thank you.” Your complements are a perfect ending to my Wednesday. Many hugs, my friend, and even more blessings..♥

  5. A lot of us tend to be much harsher on ourselves than we are on others. Perhaps it’s because we know of all our own flaws, but can never see others so fully in that same way. Some good words of wisdom here. Lauren.

    1. I believe you’re right, We strive to be kinder towards others, but we won’t give ourselves a break. It’s something most of us need to be aware of so we can change our way of thinking. Thanks so much for your kind words, Binky, they’re greatly appreciated. And I hope you’ll pay a visit to Jessie’s blog, as well…

    1. Thanks, Michelle. One can never have too much support, love, and encouragement, right? I hope you get the chance to visit Jessie’s site, too. Her spirit is incredible. ♥

  6. “I am Worthy and I am Worth It!”
very deep my dearest Lauren… i took a long walk to think of lots.. This made me actually close a chapter today… My scares i accepted.. i know why i got them… love you so much. Thanks again

    1. Aww, thank you, Maureen! I’m so glad my thoughts helped you. Sometimes I write for “me” too, with hopes of helping others. We’re all only human, you know. Love you, too, my friend, and I’m happy to have met you. 🙂 ♥

  7. Thanks for the post and introducing me with Jessie Jeanine’s website! It’s worth reading both of your blogs to forget the old and progress for a new path. Always love ❤

    1. You’re welcome, Vikram, and thank You for your kind words and for all your visits today. I appreciate your long time support and much love, too! ♥

  8. What a positive and real message you’ve shared here.

Self-love is SO important. If we don’t care about ourselves, who else can? I gave up “beating myself up” over small stuff I messed up etc…(or thought I did) along the way, quite a while ago. It made a big difference for the better, not only how I feel about myself but also how others treat me too.

Great post Lauren, glad I stopped in and have yourself a wonderful weekend!!! 😉

    1. Thanks so much, Geraldine, and it’s so important for us to love ourselves before we can successfully take care of others. I’m glad you’re no longer beating yourself up for stuff either. We tend to be so hard on ourselves, so we need to mellow out and understand that we’re doing our best in life. I wanted to write an post of encouragement and I’m happy you enjoyed it. Thanks again and have a wonderful weekend, as well! ♥

    1. Thanks, Holly, for both your kind words and for thinking of me for the interview. I’d love to participate, but I’m going out of town for a long weekend, so I’ll follow through next week. Thanks again and have a lovely day!

  9. That is a very thought provoking and insightful writing/revelation Lauren.
The poem by your friends tells the story, that even a book couldn’t give truth to, your friend summed it up perfectly, albeit the imagery leaves sadness in a heart.

    1. Thanks so much, Ian, for your kind words about the post and Jessie’s poem. Sometimes poetry isn’t all roses, as her words convey; yet she has endured, which is inspiring.

  10. It’s very beautiful and inspiring post. That poem is so wonderful, just loved it. Thanks for sharing. Let me repeat ‘ I’m worthy and I’m worth it’.
